Kathmandu Gorkhas secured a convincing 53-run victory over the Chitwan Rhinos in the Nepal Premier League (NPL) Season 2 fixture held at the TU International Cricket Ground today. The Gorkhas successfully defended a modest total of 142, bowling out the Rhinos for a meager 89 runs in just 17.2 overs.
Gorkhas’ Innings: Simpson Shines Amidst Late Collapse
After being sent in to bat by the Rhinos, Kathmandu Gorkhas initially struggled, losing three early wickets within the powerplay. However, a crucial 50-run partnership between Milind Kumar and the explosive John Simpson helped stabilize the innings. Simpson was the star with the bat, smashing a quick-fire 60 runs off just 29 balls, including three fours and five sixes, to shift the momentum.
Despite Simpson’s heroics, the Gorkhas suffered a dramatic collapse towards the end, losing seven wickets for just 20 runs. They were eventually all out for 142 in 19.4 overs. For Chitwan, the experienced Pakistani pacer Sohail Tanvir was the pick of the bowlers, taking four wickets, while Ranjit Kumar and Kamal Singh Airee grabbed two wickets each.
Rhinos’ Response: Batting Line-up Crumbles
Chasing a target of 143, the Chitwan Rhinos’ batting lineup faltered dramatically from the start. Both openers, Deepak Bohora and Dawid Malan, were dismissed cheaply, setting a precarious tone for the innings. The Rhinos never truly recovered, losing wickets at regular intervals.
Star batsman Ravi Bopara, who had scored three consecutive half-centuries in previous matches, struggled today, managing only 21 runs off 23 balls. Dev Khanal also contributed 21, but no other batsman was able to reach double digits as the team was bowled out for 89 runs.
Disciplined Bowling Seals the Win
The Kathmandu Gorkhas’ bowlers delivered a collective and disciplined performance to secure their third win of the tournament. Leg-spinner Rashid Khan led the attack with a superb spell, claiming three crucial wickets, including the prized scalp of Bopara. Skipper Karan KC, Milind Kumar, and Shahab Alam all provided excellent support, taking two wickets each to dismantle the Rhinos’ chase.
This defeat marks the second loss for Chitwan Rhinos this season, while Kathmandu Gorkhas register a vital victory to climb up the points table.
