The Lumbini Lions secured a crucial, nerve-wracking victory over the Pokhara Avengers, defeating them by three wickets in a tightly contested NPL match at the TU International Cricket Ground in Kirtipur today. The win breaks a three-match losing streak for the Lions and boosts their chances of reaching the playoffs.
Avengers’ Innings: A Story of Resurrection
Invited to bat first after losing the toss, the Pokhara Avengers’ innings was a tale of spectacular recovery. They suffered a catastrophic collapse early on, losing four wickets for just 33 runs by the eighth over, including the dismissal of skipper Kushal Bhurtel for a golden duck.
However, wicket-keeper batsman Adam Rossington and New Zealand all-rounder James Neesham produced a magnificent fightback. The pair put on a crucial 92-run partnership to rescue the innings.
- Rossington top-scored with a fluent 81 runs off 63 balls, hitting five sixes and seven fours.
- Neesham remained unbeaten, contributing a brisk 51 runs off 32 deliveries.
Their efforts powered the Avengers to a respectable, competitive total of 150/5 in their 20 overs. For the Lions, spinners Sher Malla (2-23) and Tilak Bhandari (2-25) were the most effective bowlers.
Lions’ Chase: Paudel and Jora Steer the Ship
Chasing 151, the Lumbini Lions’ pursuit was far from smooth. They needed stability, and they found it through two vital partnerships. Skipper Rohit Paudel anchored the innings with a crucial 40 runs, while debutant Sri Lankan wicket-keeper Niroshan Dickwella provided important support with 37 runs.
The match went down to the wire as the Lions lost quick wickets in the death overs. The equation came down to 10 runs needed off the final six balls.
Man of the Match contender Sandeep Jora held his nerve under immense pressure. Jora struck two well-timed boundaries in the final over, finishing unbeaten on 25 runs, to seal the thrilling chase with just two balls to spare, reaching 151/7 in 19.4 overs.
Pokhara’s bowlers fought hard to defend the total, with Bipin Khatri, Matt Taylor, and Sagar Dhakal each claiming two wickets.
Tournament Significance
