In a move that has sent shockwaves through Nepal’s political landscape, Balendra (Balen) Shah officially tendered his resignation as the Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) on January 18, 2026 (Magh 04, 2082). The resignation marks the end of his transformative nearly four-year tenure at City Hall and the beginning of a high-stakes gamble for the country’s highest executive office.
The Man Behind the Magic: From “Raw Barz” to City Hall
Before he was “Mayor Balen,” Shah was a household name in Nepal’s underground hip-hop scene. A Structural Engineer by profession with a Master’s degree from India, he first captured the public’s imagination as a battle rapper on Raw Barz.
In 2022, he staged a political coup that no one saw coming. Running as an independent candidate, he defeated seasoned veterans from the Nepali Congress and CPN-UML to become the 15th Mayor of Kathmandu. His term was defined by a “crusade” for order: live-streaming municipal meetings, tackling the city’s chronic waste management issues, and fearlessly demolishing illegal structures—even when it meant clashing with the federal government.
Why Now? The Road to Jhapa-5
Under Nepali law, an incumbent local representative must resign to contest a federal election. Balen’s exit is not a retirement, but a strategic promotion.
- The Big Leap: Following his formal alignment with the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) in late 2025, Balen has been named the party’s Prime Ministerial candidate for the upcoming general elections on March 5, 2026.
- The “David vs. Goliath” Battle: In a move seen as the ultimate political challenge, Shah will contest from Jhapa Constituency 5. This is the long-held bastion of CPN-UML Chairman and former PM KP Sharma Oli.
- Institutionalizing the “Gen Z” Spirit: Sources close to the Mayor state that his resignation is fueled by a desire to bring the “Kathmandu Model” of transparent governance to the national level. Following the massive youth-led protests in September 2025 that shook the old guard, Balen is positioning himself as the face of a “New Nepal.”
What’s Next for Kathmandu?
As Balen prepares to head to Janakpur and then Jhapa for his campaign, the keys to the capital will be handed over to Deputy Mayor Sunita Dangol, who will serve as the Acting Mayor. While many Kathmandu residents expressed sadness at his departure, supporters argue that his work in the city was merely a “pilot project” for what he intends to do for the nation.
