Renowned Nepali social activist and technology pioneer Mahabir Pun has formally entered electoral politics as an independent candidate from Myagdi-1 in the upcoming House of Representatives election set for Falgun 21, 2082 (March 5, 2026). His decision marks a significant moment in Nepal’s evolving political landscape, where independent and reform-oriented voices are gaining increasing public attention.
Pun resigned from his position as Minister for Education, Science, and Technology in the interim government to dedicate himself fully to the election campaign. He filed his nomination on Magh 6, 2082, at the Chief Election Officer’s office in Beni, Myagdi, making him one of the earliest candidates to register in the constituency. On Magh 9, the Election Commission officially assigned him the triangle (त्रिभुज) symbol, which is designated for independent candidates.
This election cycle has seen a sharp rise in independent participation nationwide, reflecting growing voter dissatisfaction with traditional party politics. Pun has stated that his entry into politics is driven by the need to reform impractical laws, promote accountability, and prioritize education, science, technology, and innovation as engines of national development.
Beyond his own candidacy, Pun has called on emerging political forces such as the Rastriya Swatantra Party, Ujyaalo Nepal Party, and Shram Sanskriti Party to unite rather than compete separately. He argues that fragmentation among new forces only benefits established parties and weakens the possibility of meaningful change.
In Myagdi, his appeal has begun to translate into support. The Ujyaalo Nepal Party has officially endorsed him, while the Rastriya Swatantra Party has indicated its intention to withdraw its candidate from the constituency and back Pun instead. These developments have strengthened his position as the election approaches, highlighting a broader shift toward reform-focused and independent leadership in Nepal’s 2026 parliamentary race.
