Kathmandu — Ballots are being cast across Nepal today in a watershed election that could redefine the Himalayan republic’s political future, and the world is watching.
Polling opened at 7 AM sharp across 23,112 voting centers nationwide, with nearly 18.9 million eligible citizens deciding who fills 275 seats in the House of Representatives. As of 1 PM local time, turnout has already climbed to 24%, a figure the Election Commission hopes will surpass 65% by day’s end.
The Spark That Lit the Fire
This election was not supposed to happen now. Originally scheduled for 2027, the vote was fast-tracked after Gen Z protesters flooded the streets in September 2025, demanding an end to systemic corruption. The uprising turned deadly, and at least 77 lives were lost. Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned under pressure. Interim Chief Justice Sushila Karki stepped in to steady the ship.
Today, Nepal is choosing its next captain.
The Name on Everyone’s Lips
Balen Shah, rapper, former Kathmandu Mayor, 35-year-old political disruptor, is the candidate sparking the most electricity. Leading the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), Shah has bypassed traditional media entirely, rallying youth through social platforms. Polls suggest RSP could claim a majority. If they do, Nepal’s next Prime Minister may be someone who once dropped bars, not bills.
Standing in his way is the very man whose fall created this moment. KP Sharma Oli, veteran communist leader, is seeking a dramatic comeback, betting that voter fatigue with chaos will swing back in his favor.
Democracy Under Siege Digitally
The campaign has not been clean. AI-generated deepfakes, fabricated videos, and doctored screenshots have circulated aggressively, many targeting Shah himself. False claims ranged from fake alcohol scandals to invented media reports. The Election Commission issued repeated warnings. Vigilance, not just votes, has been required of Nepal’s citizens today.
What Happens Next
Voting closes at 5 PM. FPTP results are expected within 24 hours. Proportional representation tallies will follow over 2 to 3 additional days, with full results anticipated by March 9.
Over 3,400 candidates. 65 political parties. One exhausted, hopeful, electrically charged nation. Nepal is not just voting today. It is deciding whether the blood spilled in September 2025 meant something.
