The Nepali Congress (NC) central working committee has suspended General Secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma for five years, citing their role in calling a special general convention without consent from the establishment faction.
The decision was taken during a meeting in Sanepa, Lalitpur, where the committee also suspended Joint General Secretary Farmullah Mansur for the same period. Party spokesperson Min Bahadur Bishwakarma informed reporters about the disciplinary action.
This move comes as the party struggles to maintain unity amid deep internal disputes. The special convention supporters had pushed forward the electoral schedule, while the establishment faction tried to mediate and prevent a formal split.
Despite efforts to reach a consensus, talks between party leaders, including President Sher Bahadur Deuba, failed to produce an agreement. Following the deadlock, the central committee decided to enforce disciplinary measures.
The suspended leaders had initially proposed forming a high command with Thapa as a future prime ministerial candidate, and asked the acting president, Purna Bahadur Khadka, to refrain from signing election tickets. The proposal was rejected by the establishment faction, which only agreed to change the president’s signature on candidate nominations.
The 15th General Convention of Nepali Congress is scheduled for Baisakh (April/May 2026). Meanwhile, Gagan Thapa has filed his candidacy for the party presidency, while nominations for other positions, including Bishwa Prakash Sharma, have also been submitted.
This latest action by the NC central committee is expected to have significant implications for the party’s leadership and internal dynamics in the coming months.
