Starting today, January 15, 2026 (Magh 1, 2082), Nepal has a new rule from Nepal Rastra Bank about using cash.
What is the rule?
You can pay up to Rs 5 lakh (500,000 rupees) in cash for any one deal. That’s fine!
But if the amount is more than Rs 5 lakh, even by just 1 rupee, you cannot use cash for the full payment or the extra part.
How to pay for bigger amounts?
- Transfer money directly from your bank account to theirs.
- Use a cheque that can only go into the other person’s bank account.
- Pay through mobile banking, apps, or online transfers.
Why this new rule?
It helps stop bad activities like hiding illegal money. It makes all big payments clear and easy to track. Plus, it pushes everyone to use digital payments, which are faster and safer.
Some exceptions (where more cash is still okay):
- Putting or taking money from your own bank account.
- Paying back loans to banks.
- Government payments, worker salaries in big projects, or emergency cases (with bank approval).
This rule applies to everyone, people, shops, and companies. Time to get used to banking more for big buys like vehicles, land, or business deals!
What do you think? good move or a bit inconvenient? Let me know!
