Kathmandu is facing one of the darkest days in recent memory after protests led by the young generation, known as “Gen Z,” turned deadly. According to reports, at least 19 protesters have died and more than 200 have been injured, with some estimates putting the injured count above 400. The tragedy has sparked anger, pain, and nationwide grief.
The protest, which began as a movement for change and against corruption, has quickly escalated into a political and social storm. Streets in Kathmandu and other major cities were filled with students and young citizens demanding justice and a better future. Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah took to social media with a powerful and emotional post, directly targeting Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. Balen said that the pain of losing a child can only be understood by a parent, and he accused KP Oli of supporting terrorism. His words reflect the deep frustration many Nepalis feel, especially as the younger generation continues to demand their voices be heard.
Today’s situation in Kathmandu remains tense. Security forces are on high alert as more people gather to mourn and protest the loss of young lives. Roads have seen disruptions, internet restrictions continue in some areas, and the public’s trust in leaders is at its lowest point in years.
