The Ministry of Home Affairs has extended the application deadline for temporary election police in 36 districts. This decision came after fewer people applied than needed in those areas.
Nepal is preparing for the House of Representatives elections on March 5, 2026. To keep the elections safe, the government plans to hire about 1,49,090 temporary election police. Out of these, 1,33,980 will work under the Nepal Police, and 15,110 under the Armed Police Force. These police will work for 40 days during the election period.
Applications opened on January 9, 2026, and the original deadline was January 15, 2026. By the deadline, more than 1,72,000 people applied across the country. This number is higher than the total posts needed. However, in 36 districts, the applications were lower than required.
These 36 districts are in provinces like Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini, and Sudurpashchim. Police officials say the low applications happened because many young people are going abroad for jobs. Also, temporary election police cannot vote in the election, which may have stopped some from applying.
To fix this shortfall, the deadline has been extended by two days in these 36 districts. People can now apply until January 17 or 18, depending on the exact notice in each district.
A selection committee in each district, led by the Chief District Officer, will choose the candidates. The government wants to make sure enough police are ready for smooth and secure elections.
This is the first time the temporary police are officially called “election police” instead of the old name “myadi police.”
Security for the elections will include the Nepali Army, regular Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, and these temporary election police. In total, over 337,000 security personnel will be deployed nationwide.
If you live in one of the 36 districts and want to apply, check your local District Police Office for the new deadline and details.
