Kathmandu Gorkhas secured a crucial five-wicket victory over Karnali Yaks in the Nepal Premier League (NPL) match held today at the Tribhuvan University International Cricket Stadium. The Gorkhas successfully chased down a 150-run target with a comfortable two overs to spare, boosting their playoff aspirations.
Yaks’ Innings Saved by Jha’s Blitz
Winning the toss and electing to bat, Karnali Yaks faced a disastrous start, slumping to 1 for 2 by the end of the first over after captain Karan KC struck on the very first ball, dismissing opener Priyank Panchal for a duck.
Despite a steadying partnership between Mark Watt (30 off 27) and Pawan Sarraf (35 off 29), the middle order faltered. It took a sensational late assault by young all-rounder Gulshan Jha to propel the Yaks to a competitive total. Jha smashed an unbeaten 49 off just 22 balls, including six fours and three sixes, sharing a vital 55-run stand for the 7th wicket with Deepak Dumre. Karnali finished their innings at 149 for 7 in 20 overs.
Kathmandu’s bowling effort was spearheaded by leg-spinner Rashid Khan, who claimed 2 wickets for 27 runs.
Gorkhas Anchor Chase with Erasmus and Simpson
In pursuit of 150, the Kathmandu Gorkhas lost a couple of early wickets, but their chase was meticulously controlled by the middle-order pair of Gerhard Erasmus and John Simpson.
Erasmus played a composed, unbeaten innings of 43 off 33 balls, while Simpson provided the acceleration with a fiery 41 off just 21 deliveries. The duo stitched together a decisive 86-run partnership for the fourth wicket, steering the Gorkhas towards the finish line.
Despite a brief scare in the final overs, Kathmandu sealed the victory, reaching 155 for 5 in 18 overs. For the Yaks, Nandan Yadav was the standout bowler, picking up three wickets.
Implications on the Points Table
This victory is Kathmandu’s fourth of the season, lifting them to second place on the points table and significantly strengthening their push for a playoff berth. For Karnali Yaks, however, this marks their fourth defeat in five games, leaving their playoff hopes hanging by a thread.
