Royals Dominate Rhinos, Chris Lynn Stars to Secure Qualifier 1 Spot

Sudurpaschim Royals continued their flawless run in the Nepal Premier League (NPL) Season 2, registering a massive 49-run victory over the Chitwan Rhinos at the TU International Cricket Stadium. The win, their sixth consecutive, confirms their position at the top of the points table and secures their direct qualification to Qualifier 1 of the playoffs.

The defeat means the Chitwan Rhinos are now precariously placed, requiring other results to go their way for a chance at the final playoff spot.

Royals’ Innings: Lynn Anchors the Ship

After losing the toss and being put in to bat, the Sudurpaschim Royals posted a competitive total of 169/4. The innings was defined by a magnificent, controlled knock from Australian star Chris Lynn, who made an unbeaten 75 runs off 56 balls before retiring hurt.

The Royals got off to a steady start, but Lynn held the innings together even as wickets fell around him. A crucial late surge, led by captain Dipendra Singh Airee and Aarif Sheikh, who both smashed a quick 24 runs each, propelled the Royals to a strong finish.

For the Rhinos, medium-pacer Ranjit Kumar was the most economical bowler, conceding just $16$ runs in his four overs and taking one wicket.

Rhinos’ Chase Fails to Launch

Chasing a target of 170, the Chitwan Rhinos’ batting unit never found momentum. They struggled from the outset, losing three wickets for just 36 runs inside the powerplay. Only veteran Ravi Bopara (29) and young Dev Khanal (28) managed to show any resistance, briefly stabilizing the middle order.

However, the pressure of the mounting required run rate proved too much. The disciplined Royals bowling attack kept a tight leash, with the run-chase collapsing completely. The Rhinos were eventually bowled out for a paltry 120 in 17.1 overs.

The bowling effort was spearheaded by Puneet Mehra, who claimed the best figures of 3 wickets for 25 runs. Dipendra Singh Airee also impressed, taking 1/9 from his three overs in a brilliant spell of spin bowling.

Unbeaten Run and Playoff Impact

The victory solidifies the Sudurpaschim Royals as the team to beat this season, entering the playoffs as the number one seed and earning two shots at reaching the final via Qualifier 1.

The loss, combined with other results today, means that Biratnagar Kings have also secured a playoff berth. The fight for the final Eliminator spot is now between Lumbini Lions and Chitwan Rhinos, depending on the results of the final league matches.
